The village of Filaki is named after the old jails that were in the village during the Turkish occupancy.

The village has a local kafenion and in Episkopi, which is 1.5 km away there are super markets, post office, tavernas and kafenions.

The beach of Episkopi is 5 km and the beach of Kavros is 6 km away.

Rethymno, the nearest town is about 15 km away and Chania about 50 km.
